Do Orthodontists Prefer Invisalign or Braces?

invisalign retainer

Some people might choose to put up with misaligned teeth instead of going through the hassles that can be associated with braces. Braces require upkeep and diligent oral hygiene. For a long time, braces were the only option for those wanting to correct their smile, but Invisalign® now offers an alternative. Many prefer Invisalign® because they are comfortable and discreet. When it comes to straightening teeth, however, an orthodontist’s preference between Invisalign® and braces depends on the severity of the problem.

Why Is Invisalign® Popular?

Invisalign Destin FL offers many benefits to patients who want straighter teeth. For one, the Invisalign® system requires fewer visits to the orthodontist than traditional braces, because braces need to be frequently tightened and adjusted. Instead, the patient uses a new fitted retainer every couple of weeks to help keep the teeth moving in the right direction. Most patients feel that these retainers are much more comfortable than metal braces, since they don’t come with the tension and soreness that braces can cause.

Invisalign® also offers patients the freedom to eat more of the foods they like. Chewy and excessively hard foods are generally not advised with braces, because they can get stuck between the brackets and become quite difficult to remove. Brushing, flossing, and cleaning are also more challenging with traditional braces. Invisalign retainer, on the other hand, can be removed whenever you want to eat or brush your teeth.

Invisalign retainer are far less conspicuous than metal braces. In fact, other people may not notice them at all. This is reason enough for many people to choose them over traditional braces.

When Do Orthodontists Prefer Braces?

Because the Invisalign® system makes life easier for their patients, orthodontists often prefer it over metal braces. However, for patients with severely misaligned teeth, braces are the better option. Sometimes, teeth need to be twisted as part of the straightening process. They may also need to be lengthened or dramatically repositioned. In cases like these, traditional braces are typically the only solution.

If it is determined that you need braces, you have a few different options. Braces can be clear or sometimes even fitted on the back of your teeth. They can also be ceramic, which helps them blend in with the natural color of the teeth.

If you are unsure whether braces or Invisalign® are the right course of treatment for you, Dr. Runnels can examine your teeth and determine what you need. If you need your teeth straightened and are not a candidate for Invisalign®, feel free to ask our skilled orthodontist about options for making your braces more comfortable and less noticeable.
