At Runnels Orthodontics, we understand that getting braces can be a big decision. Whether you are dealing with crowded teeth, crooked teeth, or cosmetic concerns, braces can help correct your teeth. At our office in Destin, FL, we help many patients determine whether braces are the right solution for them and help them prepare for the process. We would love to start the process with you.
How Braces Can Improve Your Dental Health
Braces are not always just about achieving a beautiful smile. They can also be a critical tool for bite correction and overall dental health. When your teeth are properly aligned, it can be easier to maintain good oral hygiene and avoid dental problems such as cavities and gum disease. At our office, we offer many different options, including traditional braces and clear aligners to suit your lifestyle and your needs.
How to Prepare for Braces From Consultation to Fitting
Your Pre-Braces Dental Check-Up
Before we fit you with your orthodontist braces, we will conduct a comprehensive dental check-up. We want to ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy and well-suited for braces. Before moving forward with your orthodontics treatment plan, there may be existing dental problems that will need to be addressed.
Understanding the Different Types of Braces
The next step will be choosing the type of braces that are suited to your situation. At our practice, many of our patients are looking for cost-effective options while others may be searching for a more discreet way to correct their crowded teeth. We offer:
Traditional braces are made from metal and are often the most cost-effective option. Metal brackets are adhered to each tooth, and the brackets are attached using an archwire. The wire is adjusted over time as the teeth shift position. We use Carriere® SLX™ self-ligating brackets, which provide greater comfort for our patients. They also make changing the wire easier, and the unique design serves to reduce the chance of the bonding agent failing.
This option is more discreet and is sometimes a popular choice for adults who want less visible braces. While this type of bracket can be more fragile, we also carry sports mouth guards to protect the braces of our more active patients.
These braces are similar to traditional metal braces, but the brackets and wires are fitted to the back side of the teeth making them much less visible when you smile. Lingual braces fittings are a specialized process that not all orthodontists have experience with. However, Dr. Runnels has extensive experience in fitting lingual braces and is able to offer this option to patients who want to have the least visible change to their appearance during treatment.
Preparing Mentally for Braces
Getting braces is a commitment that requires both patience and adaptability. Depending on your situation, it can take anywhere from several months to more than a year to correct your bite and straighten your teeth. We will help you to know what you can expect from your treatment so that you can be prepared for the entire process.
Preparing for Lifestyle Changes
Regardless of the type of braces you choose, having them fitted will require some changes to your daily routine. Teeth straightening requires care and attention that can range from additional oral hygiene steps to avoiding certain foods. You may need to stay away from hard or sticky candies like gum and suckers as well as popcorn, nuts, or other foods as advised by your orthodontics team.
Other Treatment Considerations
Braces can be a convenient treatment option for many people because it is easier to comply with the treatment plan. However, some people are looking for an option that can allow them to eat all of their usual foods and go a little longer in between appointments. For this type of patient, clear aligners such as Invisalign may be the right option. We will go over the pros and cons of each option and determine which of these two solutions would provide better bite correction and teeth straightening in your situation.
Your Consultation and Custom Treatment Plan
At our orthodontics office, we prioritize personalized care. We understand that each patient is unique, with individual needs and specific oral health concerns. It is with this understanding that we approach each consultation, dedicating the time and attention necessary to truly get to know you and your dental needs.
Once we have developed a custom treatment plan, you will begin the process of straightening your teeth. With braces, you can expect regular appointments at intervals of six to 10 weeks. After each adjustment, you will experience some soreness and discomfort for two or three days until your teeth adjust to the new position. It can take some time for your lips and tongue to adjust to your new braces. If your braces break or become loose, you will need to come in for additional appointments to fix the appliance.
