How the Carriere Distalizer Works

Carriere Distalizer

Correcting an overbite is one problem that has challenged orthodontics for many years. A few years ago, wearing headgear was the only treatment option for an overbite. The Carriere Distalizer is an innovation that solves the problem of misaligned teeth. Excess teeth make correcting an overbite difficult, but the Carriere Distalizer negates the need for removing permanent teeth to correct it.
The Carriere Distalizer, although modest-looking, solves the overbite problem as well as the headgear. The device is applied before the application of braces or Invisalign. It is prudent that you understand how the device works if you are considering it as a viable treatment option.
How Does the Carriere Distalizer Work?
Step 1: Creating an anchor point. The device works by having an anchor point created in your mouth using a full mandibular appliance, mini-screws, a lower Essex appliance, or a passive lingual arch. The arm of the Carriere Distalizer is then attached to the teeth on your upper jaw. The device is attached on each side of your mouth to maintain its position.
Step 2: Attaching an elastic band. Your orthodontist will attach an elastic band to the molars on your lower back jaw and the upper bar. This band must be worn at all times but can be removed during meals. If the elasticity in the band is good, it will only take a few months for you to notice results. The extent of your overbite ultimately determines the duration of the treatment.
Step 3: Removing the arms of the device. To completely correct your bite, the orthodontist will remove the arms of the Carriere Distalizer and install braces or Invisalign®. The braces or Invisalign® will help with teeth alignment.
What Should You Expect?
The Carriere Distalizer is made of a metal bar that is bonded to your canine teeth and molars. An elastic band is placed and tension adjusted to correct your overbite. This will cause your teeth to slowly shift over time. When compared to other treatment options, this device is quick and is barely noticeable.
If you have overbite problems, you may be a good candidate for the Carriere Distalizer. Many studies on the device have yielded positive results and concluded that the device is effective for treating malocclusion.
