The Carriere Distalizer was created to replace bulky headgear and is used to correct overbites in patients. It is used before braces are put on the front teeth to finish correcting the overbite. An overbite occurs when the jaws or teeth are not properly aligned, causing the upper front teeth to cover the lower teeth. The Carriere Distalizer is used to realign the back teeth first and then braces are used to align the front teeth.
Why Early Treatment Is Important
It is important to treat an overbite early because it can deepen if teeth are worn down. Overbites which make cleaning teeth and gums difficult can lead to gum disease, tooth decay or loss. Severe overbites can cause pain in teeth and jaws along with headaches, resulting in a lack of proper nutrients from pain associated with eating. Treating an overbite early can eliminate the risk of these health issues later in life.
How the Carriere Distalizer Is Installed
The orthodontist creates an anchor point first with mini screws, a passive lingual arch, or a full mandibular appliance before attaching the Carriere Distalizer arm to the front teeth on both sides of the mouth. The orthodontists then place elastics onto the upper bar and lower back molars which are only removed when eating. The arm goes across the upper back teeth with an anchor point on the lower molar to secure the elastics.
How the Carriere Distalizer Works
Once the curved metal bar is attached and elastics are secured, it corrects overbites by moving the back teeth into their proper placement. With one end attached to your canines and the other to a molar, the elastics are used to produce the necessary force required to move the teeth. Once it is removed, the orthodontist will use braces to fix the front teeth when necessary. The idea is to align the back teeth before the front teeth to ensure the teeth are all properly aligned.
People with Carriere Distalizers should avoid foods that are sticky or hard such as gum, hard candy, and sticky candy like caramel. Popcorn should also be avoided because the kernels can get stuck in the metal arm. Corn on the cob is not recommended and apples must be cut into slices.
