Clear Braces vs. Traditional Braces

If your child is in their teen years, your dentist and orthodontist may start discussing their potential need for braces. While it may seem like a bit of a “right of passage” for many teenagers, there is still a long held stigma that goes hand in hand with traditional braces. Since it’s important to correct your child’s misaligned teeth for both health and cosmetic benefits, in many cases, braces may be unavoidable. If your teen wants to avoid the ascetic appearance of metal braces, they’ll be happy to know there’s an alternative.

Clear Braces Look & Feel

Unlike metal braces which have a metal wire that applies pressure to the teeth, clear braces are usually made of plastic or ceramic which attach to the tooth’s surface. Metal braces typically have a metal bracket over a metal band which fits around the teeth individually, and they often make teens feel insecure and shy about smiling. Clear braces, on the other hand, are barely visible.

Durability

While it’s true that metal braces have long life and durability, clear plastic braces are not far behind. Teens will typically need to change their clear braces every two weeks. Because of this, there is little need to worry about long-term durability of the braces.

What to Expect

Unlike traditional metal braces, which must be worn all the time, clear braces usually are worn about 20 – 22 hours per day. This means that there’s some “down time” which will allow teens to eat and clean their teeth without the metal of traditional braces getting in the way. There’s also no food restrictions, so the patient doesn’t have to worry about adjusting their diet simply due to the use of clear braces.

Which is right for your teen?

Choosing between clear and traditional braces is a discussion for you to have with your teens as well as their dentist and orthodontist. It’s true, clear braces aren’t for everyone. It’s important for you to weigh all the pros and cons before deciding.
