Are Lingual Braces a Good Option for Teens?

Teens who need braces may not be too keen on the idea, but advances in orthodontic treatments have created a variety of options to meet their aesthetic and functionality needs. While each individual will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine which course of treatment may be best for specific situations, lingual braces may be a viable option for your child.

What are lingual braces?

Lingual braces are one of the newest options available and consist of braces that go behind the teeth rather than in front. Not every orthodontist offers this option because special training is required in order to place them. Not every mouth issue can be corrected with these braces, and the treatments may take longer than regular braces.

It is common knowledge that straighter teeth are easier to clean and less likely to develop tooth decay, but this is often not enough to convince your child that braces are a good idea. While there are clear dental trays available that align teeth over time, these take longer and are still more visible than lingual braces. Even ceramic braces, which are less visible than metal, still have a visible metal wire. For discreet dentistry with real results and comparable treatment time, lingual braces are in the top tier.

Advantages of lingual braces

Lingual braces can be a good option for a teen who is self-conscious about his or her smile but does not want to endure traditional metal braces. This form of braces does not work for every issue, so it is a good idea to have your child examined by our medical team before deciding on braces. If these braces are approved, your child may feel more at ease about impending yearbook photos and social engagements.

During your teen’s consultation, his or her mouth will thoroughly be examined, and x-rays may be taken to determine the extent of correction your child may need. For basic teeth straightening, lingual braces may be an option, but for more pronounced bite corrections, alternative braces options may need to be discussed.
