What Are Runnels Retainers?

If you have crowded or misaligned teeth, you should consider using braces, Invisalign, or other orthodontic techniques to achieve lasting changes in your smile. After you have finished receiving these treatments, you can maintain your straight, attractive teeth by getting Runnels retainers from M. Scott Runnels Orthodontics in Destin, FL.

What Are Runnels Retainers?

Runnels retainers are plastic retainers that are used to maintain the benefits of your braces, Invisalign, or other tooth-straightening treatments. Braces and Invisalign improve your smile by gradually moving your teeth into new positions inside your mouth. If you do not take good care of your teeth after you complete these orthodontic treatments, your teeth could shift back to their old locations.

To avoid this issue, you should wear a retainer after you have finished straightening your teeth. We will use three-dimensional imaging to craft your customized retainers. These sophisticated devices will be made of a specialized thermoplastic material that will feel comfortable inside your mouth. Since this material is transparent, other people will not be able to tell that you are wearing a retainer.

Will I Have To Wear My Retainer During the Daytime?

The amount of time that you spend wearing your retainer will depend on the condition of your teeth, your aesthetic goals, and other factors. In general, you’ll need to wear your retainer during the daytime and nighttime for about three months after you finish your initial orthodontic treatment. After that point, you will probably be able to stop wearing your device during the daytime.

We will provide you with a set of twelve different retainers. It’s important to regularly switch out your old retainer and begin wearing a new device. When you receive this customized set, we will give you detailed instructions about how long you should wear each of your retainers. We will also teach you how to clean and care for these devices.

What Should I Do if I Lose or Damage My Retainer?

It’s important to act quickly if you lose or damage your retainer. When you stop wearing your retainer, your teeth can begin to move to new locations in your mouth. These changes can undo the benefits of your braces or other orthodontic treatments. As a result, you might have to receive additional treatments in order to repair this damage.

To prevent this issue from damaging your teeth, you should contact our office as soon as possible. We will let you know whether you can begin wearing one of your other retainers. Alternatively, we can help you replace your broken or lost Runnels retainer.

What Techniques Can I Use To Straighten My Teeth?

Before you begin wearing your Runnels retainers, you will need to use braces or other orthodontic methods to straighten your teeth. Since we can use a wide range of methods to improve your teeth, you will be able to find an orthodontic treatment that will work for you.

Traditional Metal Braces

If you are looking for a cost-effective, easy way to improve your teeth, you will probably benefit from getting traditional metal braces. When you select this tooth-straightening method, we will attach metal brackets to your teeth. Since these metal brackets are very strong and durable, you will be less likely to spend your time or money visiting our office to repair broken brackets.

Lingual Braces

If you would like your braces to be discreet and unobtrusive, you should consider getting lingual braces. Our extensive training will allow us to safely attach these braces to the backs of your teeth. As a result, people will not be able to see your braces when you smile.

Ceramic Braces

When you receive ceramic braces, we can customize your braces to match the color of your teeth. Alternatively, we can provide you with translucent braces. Since these clear brackets are stain-resistant, you won’t need to worry about discoloring your brackets during the treatment process.

That said, it’s important to understand that ceramic braces are not as durable as traditional metal braces. As a result, if you use this technique to improve your smile, you will need to wear a customized mouthguard to protect your braces when you are playing sports.

Invisalign

Invisalign allows you to straighten your teeth and achieve an attractive smile without dealing with brackets or wires. During this treatment, we will use three-dimensional technology to create detailed images of your teeth. These images will be used to make a set of customized plastic aligners that are designed to correct your unique orthodontic problems. In general, it will take about six to 15 months for this treatment to improve your teeth.

You will wear each of your aligners for about one week. To ensure that this treatment is able to move your teeth into better locations inside your mouth, you will need to wear your aligners during the day and night. Since you can take off your aligners when you clean your teeth and eat, you’ll be able to maintain good oral hygiene and enjoy your favorite foods during this time.

Can I Brush My Teeth Less Frequently While I Am Wearing My Braces?

You still need to practice good oral hygiene while you are wearing your braces. In general, we recommend brushing your teeth five minutes after you eat a meal or a snack. Cleaning your teeth after you eat will help you avoid developing cavities and other issues. To ensure that you are able to brush your teeth when you are away from your home, you should carry a travel toothbrush in your backpack or purse.

It’s normal to experience some difficulty when you first begin brushing between your brackets and wires. To help you adjust to your braces, we will show you techniques that will allow you to thoroughly clean your teeth during your orthodontic treatment.

How Much Will My Braces or Invisalign Treatment Cost?

Since your treatment will be customized to address your unique orthodontic issues, your costs will vary. When you have your initial meeting at our office, we will look at your teeth and talk about the orthodontic problems that are bothering you. After we’ve assessed your teeth, we can discuss the benefits of different treatment options with you.

Once you have chosen a treatment, we will provide you with more information about the anticipated cost of your desired plan. At this point, we will tell you more about our different financing options. We can also look at your insurance policy and help you determine whether your plan will cover some of the costs of your treatment.

How Long Will My Braces or Aligners Take To Improve My Teeth?

The length of time that you spend wearing braces or aligners will depend on the complexity of your orthodontic issues, your ability to take good care of your oral appliances, and other variables. Typically, our orthodontic treatments will take about eight to 30 months to improve your smile.

We can give you a more detailed estimate of the total length of your treatment after we have examined your teeth. In addition, we can tell you about the special techniques that we can use to decrease the length of your treatment. For example, our specialized PROPEL device can be used to quickly move your teeth into better positions inside your mouth. This device makes tiny injuries in your mouth that will speed up your body’s natural healing processes.

Will I Be Able To Remove My Braces During a Wedding or Other Special Event?

When you begin wearing braces, your brackets and wires will usually remain in your mouth throughout the duration of your treatment. Removing your braces before we have finished improving your teeth can increase the overall length and cost of your treatment. As a result, you should not try to take off your braces for a special event.

Choose Another Treatment Option

If you would like to improve your teeth without changing your appearance on your wedding day or other important occasions, you should consider using an alternative method to enhance your smile.

For example, if you receive Invisalign, you will wear plastic aligners during your treatment plan. Typically, you will need to wear these aligners during the majority of the day. However, under some circumstances, you might be able to remove your aligners for a special occasion without compromising the effectiveness of your treatment.

Do I Need to Change My Eating Habits While I Am Straightening My Teeth?

If you are using Invisalign to correct your smile, you will not need to make adjustments to your eating habits. Instead, you will take off your aligners while you are eating or drinking.

If you are wearing braces, you will need to avoid certain foods while you are using this orthodontic treatment. In particular, you should not bite into whole apples, eat caramels, or chew on ice while you are wearing braces. In addition, you should not chew gum until your treatment is complete. Avoiding these foods will protect your braces and reduce your chances of experiencing broken brackets and other issues.

How Can I Protect My Teeth While I Play Sports?

Playing sports is a great way to spend time with your friends and exercise your body. However, you could break your teeth or have a tooth knocked out while you are playing sports. Further, if you are wearing braces, you might develop loose brackets or other issues while you are playing sports.

To protect your teeth and prevent damage to your braces, you should wear a mouthguard during games and other sporting activities. We can provide you with a customized mouthguard that is designed to feel comfortable in your mouth. Wearing your mouthguard will allow you to enjoy your sporting activities without endangering your teeth.

How Can I Improve the Color of My Teeth?

Drinking coffee, tea, and other substances can cause your teeth to look yellow and dull. After you finish straightening your teeth with Invisalign or braces, you can continue to improve your smile by getting a tooth-whitening treatment. We can use many different techniques to fix your discolored or yellow teeth.

For example, we can use sophisticated techniques to change the color of your teeth during an appointment at our office. Receiving an in-office teeth whitening treatment is a fast, easy way to obtain brighter teeth. Alternatively, we can provide you with specialized retainers and other tooth-whitening treatments that you can use in the comfort of your own home.
