Understanding the Different Types of Braces

Hearing that you need orthodontic treatment can be daunting, especially if you think your only option is traditional metal braces. Sure, these braces are still a popular choice among many, but you should be happy to know there are different types of braces available. If you want to know which treatment is best for you, it helps to have a basic understanding of the different types of braces, including the pros and cons of each method.

Traditional Metal Braces

These braces consist of brackets and wires that are very strong and durable. Traditional metal braces are a great option for children and teens who like the idea of personalizing the devices by choosing the color of the elastics. These braces are also the most affordable. However, their obvious drawback is the fact that they are highly visible and can be uncomfortable for some.

Ceramic Braces

These types of braces are a great option for those who want a more discreet treatment method. Ceramic braces can be customized to match the shade of your natural teeth. Clarity™ brackets, which are translucent, blend in with the natural teeth and are stain resistant. These types of braces are more brittle than metal braces, and the patient needs to be careful not to hurt the brackets or wires and/or anything inside their mouths while undergoing treatment.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are unique in that they are attached to the inner surfaces of the teeth. They offer yet another discreet treatment option since the devices aren’t visible when the patient smiles. However, these braces aren’t right for everyone.

Invisalign®

Invisalign® takes advantage of innovative 3D digital technology to create customized aligners that are used to gradually shift the teeth into the proper positions. This allows for a discreet treatment experience since the aligners are clear and hardly noticeable. In fact, they can even be removed as needed, which isn’t possible with the other types of braces.
