Bad breath is a common condition that is believed to affect more than 50% of the total population today. The condition is particularly pronounced in people with braces. Fortunately, there are things you can do to prevent or deal with bad breath while wearing braces.
What causes it?
The leading cause of bad breath is the presence of bacteria in the mouth. The bacteria are usually attracted by food remains that are stuck in between your teeth. Braces make it easier for food particles to get stuck in your teeth. If not cleaned, the bacteria will feed on the food and produce an unpleasant smell. Other causes include poor oral hygiene, smoking, and alcohol consumption.
Is it preventable?
Fortunately, bad breath is preventable, and with the cautious practice of specific procedures, you can steer clear of it.
Drink lots of water
Dehydration is known to increase the likelihood of having bad breath. Failure to take in the right amount of water throughout the day will reduce the saliva in the mouth. Consequently, the food particles and bacteria get lodged in your mouth for longer, increasing your susceptibility to bad breath. Drink at least six glasses of water a day to stay hydrated and minimize your chances of having unpleasant breath.
Use mouthwash regularly
Most mouthwash products contain strong anti-bacterial elements. These will help combat the bacteria in your mouth and help prevent the development of a bad odor inside the mouth.
Brush and floss regularly
The food particles stuck between your teeth and braces build up after every meal or snack you take. Brush your teeth after every meal and rinse your mouth thoroughly when you are done.
Eat a healthy diet
To keep your mouth less susceptible to bad breath, ensure that your diet includes foods that are low in sugar content. You may want to increase your intake of vitamins and proteins mostly found in foods like milk, vegetables, and fruits.
