The Final Visit: Removing Your Braces

If you have been living with braces for some time, you are probably looking forward to life with them off. However, you may have a few questions about different aspects of the removal process. Here are some common questions and their answers:

How much advance notice will I have before my braces are removed?

Your orthodontist will likely tell you at your last adjustment that they plan to remove your braces at the next visit. It is important to note that there are a number of factors that can affect whether your brace actually come off or not. Your teeth can move unexpectedly before the next visit, or they may not move enough. In either case, your orthodontist may put off the removal.

How long does it take to get braces off?

One of the great things about the removal process is that taking braces off usually takes less time than putting them on. The time taken can vary but generally averages out at about an hour.

Does getting braces off hurt?

There is usually no pain involved in getting braces removed and the procedure is usually completed without the use of an anesthetic. As someone who has been wearing braces for some time, you will already be accustomed to the routine discomfort that can come with adjustments. Getting your brace off will usually involve sensations that you have felt before.

The process involves removing the brackets, bands, and archwire along with the adhesive. The brackets will be popped off your teeth individually. Expect to feel some pressure during this part of the process, but it should not cause pain.

The brackets are removed using special pliers that squeeze the individual brackets so that they can be peeled from the teeth. Removing the brackets is often completed quickly; in fact, this part of the removal is usually over in a minute or two. After the brackets are gone, there will still be adhesive left on the tooth – this will be removed with a bur or another set of special pliers. This is often the part of removing braces that takes the most time.
