Selecting the Right Panama City Orthodontist

Orthodontics is a field of dentistry concerned with the correction of teeth and jaws that are incorrectly positioned. Teeth that are crooked or fit together improperly are more difficult to clean, create additional stress on chewing muscles and are at greater risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease. If your teeth are crooked misaligned, our Panama City orthodontist can help you learn more about the best treatment option for your needs.

Orthodontists provide a great number of services that can help you preserve and enhance your smile and enjoy good gum health. If you are looking for a Panama City orthodontist to correct your orthodontic problems, you can start by asking Dr. Ragan what type of treatment would benefit you the most.

Braces

When most people think of braces, they picture traditional metal braces. While metal braces are still around, they have been significantly improved upon, and other types of braces have also been developed with their own unique benefits.

Traditional Braces

Conventional metal braces involve the use of elastic bands, brackets and an arch wire. The brackets are affixed to the front of teeth and help anchor the braces. The brackets have wires running through them and tiny elastic bands ensure the arch wires stay in the brackets. Tension is applied by tightening the arch wires, which helps shift them into their proper position.

Today’s braces are lighter, smaller and less visible than before. After the braces are taken out, the patient must wear a retainer for a minimum of typically one year to ensure that their teeth stay in their new positions.

Some advantages of traditional metal braces include the fact that they are usually the most effective form of treatment for more severe orthodontic problems.

You can also opt for ceramic braces, which function similarly to traditional braces but can customized to match the color of your teeth, thereby making them less noticeable. If you do not qualify for Invisalign® but still want the least visible option possible, you can even choose to have your braces affixed to the back of your teeth. This option is known as lingual braces.

Invisalign®

If you prefer a less visible treatment option, Invisalign® may be right for you. This system utilizes custom-made plastic aligners that are formed to gradually shift teeth into correct position. You will periodically switch to new aligners until your teeth are in proper position.

Invisalign® offers many of the same benefits of conventional braces with the added benefit that the aligners are nearly invisible. You can remove your aligners for brushing, eating or flossing.

Among the advantages to the Invisalign® system are the fact that it is nearly invisible and allows you to eat and drink what you like.
