The Many Benefits of Having Straight Teeth

Why do you want to have straight teeth? If you were to ask most people this question, they would say it’s because they understand that the straighter their teeth are, the better their smile looks. When a person has straight teeth, they are more confident. They have the confidence to smile, and they have the confidence to laugh without putting their hands over their mouth.

While it is true that there are many aesthetic benefits to having straight teeth, the benefits don’t stop there. There are a lot of functional benefits that come to those who take the time to straighten their teeth.

It Is Easier to Clean Your Teeth

Dental hygiene revolves around brushing and flossing your teeth. Most dentists will encourage you to brush and floss your teeth at least two times during the day. If you have crooked teeth, your brushing and flossing routine may not to be as effective as you would like. This is because crooked teeth allow food to get trapped in them more easily. When your teeth are straight, you are able to adequately clean the surface of your teeth. It is easier for you to get rid of any food that is stuck in your teeth. As a result, future dental problems will all but disappear.

Healthy Teeth and Gums

This goes hand-in-hand with the previous point. When your teeth are straight, you face a much lower risk of developing tooth decay. Additionally, problems such as gum disease are less likely to occur. Gum disease happens more often in individuals who have teeth that are either crowded or spaced too far apart. Your gums may become red or inflamed. However, if your teeth are straight, your gums fit more securely with your teeth. This provides the greatest defense for your teeth and your gums.

You Will Be Healthier

Many people do not realize the link that exists between their oral health and their overall health. If a person has good oral health, other problems such as bleeding gums, mouth sores, bone loss and other potentially serious health issues disappear. If you have problems with bleeding gums or sores in your mouth, this could lead to serious infections, which in turn can lead to heart disease, pneumonia and other serious body and heart ailments.

Psychological Benefits

There are even psychological benefits that come to those who have straight teeth. A healthy smile is a great way to improve your confidence. When a person has a less than perfect smile, they focus on hiding their teeth. They may smile with their hand over their mouth, or they may turn away from people when they smile. Being uncomfortable with their smile might even cause someone to stop laughing or to not want to be around other people. None of these things are good for self-esteem.
