Maintain Straight Teeth after Braces with Vivera Retainers

Modern orthodontic devices such as Invisalign aligners and metal braces are incredibly effective. Patients though will need to make some lifestyle changes to maintain a straight and healthy smile after their treatment has concluded. For many, this will include the use of a retainer for the rest of their life. If you are currently being treated for a misaligned smile (malocclusion), then you might want to consider the use of Vivera retainers to maintain the position of your teeth after the use of braces.

Misaligned Teeth

Patients with malocclusion will need to treat this condition for medical reasons as well as cosmetic reasons. Over the years, a misaligned smile can create some unfortunate side effects such as a speech impediment. Teeth that are in the wrong position also have a much higher chance of becoming chipped or cracked, and this type of damage can be painful, expensive, and unsightly. Luckily, orthodontic treatments have a very high rate of success and can often be carried out in as little as a few months. At that point, patients will then need to speak with their dentist about what they can do to maintain a straight smile after the braces have been taken off.

The Importance of Retainers

Even after your teeth have been “pulled” into a new position from braces, studies have shown that they will eventually shift back to their original position if retainers are not used. This takes place because everyone’s jaw is slightly different, and your teeth will always attempt to shift back to their original position. By using a retainer, you are ensuring that your teeth will remain in the proper and healthy position throughout your lifetime.

Vivera Retainers

Traditional retainers are custom devices that slide over the teeth to apply a small amount of pressure. Unfortunately, many patients do not enjoy the look or feel of these devices and would like a more comfortable and natural fit. Vivera retainers are similar to Invisalign aligners in the fact that they are custom trays that are nearly invisible once they are in the mouth. Patients have the option to take them out when they would like to eat or brush their teeth. Another benefit of Vivera retainers is the fact that they are 30 percent stronger than traditional retainers and have a much smaller chance of cracking or bending.

What to Expect With Vivera Retainers

For most patients, Vivera retainers will need to be worn between 12 and 20 hours a day for the first few months. After the first six months are over, they will then need to wear their Vivera retainers only a few hours a week to maintain their smile. Vivera retainers will last for upwards of 10 years depending on how well you care for them and your oral hygiene habits.
