Laser Gum Sculpting

Sometimes gum lines in the mouth form too low or too high on the teeth, which alters the appearance and can make people feel self-conscious. Using a technique known as laser gum sculpting, cosmetic dentists easily correct the problem to boost a client’s self-esteem.

At M. Scott Runnels Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics in Destin and Panama City Beach, we offer Laser Gum Sculpting treatment to give you your best smile. Contact Dr. Runnels today to learn more or to make an appointment.

Gum Line Causes

Gums that cover a large area of the teeth, making them look smaller. This condition may form because of genetics, health conditions or when taking certain prescription medications. On the other hand, gums that are too high can make teeth appear overly large. Known as gum recession, the condition might occur with a lack of quality oral care. This condition may lead to tooth decay and eventually tooth loss. While gum contouring is not usually necessary, reshaping these soft tissues enhances appearance and smile.

What to Expect

During an initial consultation, our orthodontist will perform an extensive examination and explain the technique needed to get the desired look.

Before undergoing the procedure, patients will be advised to stop taking anticoagulant medication, aspirin or other formulations that interfere with blood clotting. Prior to beginning the gum sculpting surgery, a new gum line may be drawn as a guide. This will help you get an indication of where the new gum line will appear. The dentist then inserts appliances to keep the mouth open and injects local anesthesia.

With the gum tissue numb, a laser will be used to cut and remove excess tissue. The laser makes precise cuts and keeps bleeding to a minimum by closing tiny blood vessels along the way. Following the procedure, patients receive written and verbal instructions about diet, medications and proper oral care that promotes healing.

Recovery

For any discomfort experienced within the first few days of the surgery, it’s commonly recommended to take over-the-counter acetaminophen or similar medication that eliminate pain but do not encourage bleeding. Diet must initially consist of soft foods that are cool in temperature. Spicy foods, nuts, seeds and other sharp foods must be avoided. The long list of acceptable foods includes cottage cheese, ice cream and yogurt, along with eggs, soft fruits and vegetables.

The tissue heals gradually over time and generally requires eight to 12 weeks before returning to a more normal state. If during that time, you experience unusual or extended swelling, bruising or bleeding, contact us for a follow-up.
