Invisalign vs. Traditional Braces: What You Need to Know

When choosing orthodontic treatment for both kids and adults today, there are two common options: braces and Invisalign®. Invisalign® is a relatively new treatment that wasn’t an available option just a few decades ago, but now orthodontic patients have much more choice when it comes to their treatment. It can be difficult to decide which option is right for you, and you should always talk to your orthodontist for advice before making the final decision. Here’s what you need to know when comparing Invisalign® and traditional braces.

Cost

The first question many people have when choosing an orthodontic treatment is which option is cheaper. However, the cost of Invisalign® and traditional braces usually ends up being about the same, starting at around $3,000. If you have dental coverage, you may find that your insurance covers one treatment more than the other, so that might be a relevant factor when choosing the best option for you.

Process

The process of traditional braces varies widely, depending on what type of dental alignment problems you are looking to correct. In some cases, traditional braces can straighten teeth in just six months, but in other cases, it can take up to two years. Invisalign® typically takes about a year to show effects. The clear aligners are molds that slowly move the teeth back into place, while traditional braces use brackets and wires. Although there are many conveniences to having Invisalign®, it can only be used to treat certain types of dental misalignments. If you need more in-depth orthodontic treatment, you will likely need traditional braces to see the results you want.

Eating and Drinking

One of the biggest conveniences of having Invisalign® is that you can eat anything you would have eaten before while on the aligners. This is because you remove them while you are eating and drinking. For many people, this is a big incentive to get Invisalign®. However, because the trays are removable, there’s lots of temptation not to stick to your treatment plan. If you are worried about not adhering to your treatment plan, traditional braces may be the better option for you.

Ultimately, you will need to speak with your orthodontist to determine which type of treatment is right for you. They will assess your teeth to determine what would be most helpful. Dr. M.
