How to Maintain Braces and Clean Teeth

The appearance of teeth varies from one person to another. Some people feel that their teeth are not well aligned and would like to change the structure and appearance. To change this and other issues including filling gaps, under bites and overbites, dental braces are used. After getting the braces, one has to take care and maintain braces and at the same time maintain a healthy set of teeth. The following practices will help you maintain your braces and teeth well.
The Best Advice Is from Our Orthodontist
After the braces are fitted, you can only be guaranteed to get the best maintenance tips from the orthodontist who treated you. After all, the dentist knows the problems that you will encounter during the period you will have the braces on. Make sure you book an appointment with our orthodontist regularly so that they can monitor your progress.
Brush Regularly
One of the misconceptions that people have is that braces help maintain your teeth. This is wrong. Braces are known to hold food particles and if they are not cleaned, you will end up having a bad breath. Brushing regularly will help you avoid this. Remember that this is a routine and should be followed without taking unnecessary breaks.
Flossing
Flossing with braces is a necessary step when it comes to maintaining them. This is because the filaments used for this process are able to reach areas of the teeth where the toothbrush can’t. Failure to floss could lead to build-up of food particles in between the teeth, and this facilitates dental diseases. An important thing to note is that some of the flossing equipment can damage your teeth if used recklessly. It is therefore wise to train yourself adequately to prevent this.
Protect the Braces
While brushing, do not brush vigorously to ensure that the braces stay intact. Some of the ways of ensuring that the braces stay intact include:
• Using a soft toothbrush that easily moves on the surface of the brace. A hard toothbrush will hold onto the braces and move them.
• Don’t press the brush too hard against the braces. The slightest tilting will compromise the whole procedure.
• Brush in a slow, circular motion.
