How to Avoid Bad Breath with Braces

If you’re suffering from bad breath with braces, you might be wondering what the cause is and how you can make it go away. Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is caused by a bacteria in the mouth that attaches to the surfaces on the inside. Thus, when you have braces, there are more surfaces and more opportunities for the bacteria to grow. When the bacteria grows, it can cause harm to your mouth. One of the ways that it can harm your mouth is through bad breath.

However, there are ways to tame the odor and to get the bacteria under control. The main way to do this is to brush often. You should brush your teeth, braces, gums, and tongue when you first wake up in the morning. Also, be sure to brush after each meal or snack and before you go to bed at night. Particles of food tend to get stuck not only between your teeth but also between your braces and your teeth. When food gets trapped, then you will have more bacteria growing in your mouth.

Flossing is another way to prevent bad breath. It may be difficult to floss with the brackets and wires involved, but it is an absolute must to keep your teeth healthy. It is also important to keep a check on your nutrition. Being sure to each lots of nutritious foods such as vegetables, and drinking lots of water will decrease your chances of having foul breath. You need to avoid sugary foods and drinks as much as possible.

Mouthwash may also be helpful during this time to fight the bacteria. It will, however, need to be a fluoride mouthwash to help strengthen your teeth as well as to provide a defense against the bacteria. You may also choose to purchase a tongue scraper for extra support. Use the tongue scraper to release any tartar buildup on your tongue that you may have missed while brushing.
