Does Getting Braces off Hurt?

Getting braces is something many kids and teens have to go through at some point in order to straighten their teeth. Although it’s so common, there’s still usually some anxiety over how the whole procedure is going to feel. After the braces are put on, many people start wondering if getting them off is going to hurt. While getting braces off is going to be an interesting sensation for a while, it isn’t particularly painful. In fact, there’s probably going to be less soreness with getting braces off than with getting them on.
At the Appointment
When you see the orthodontist to get your braces off, you can expect the procedure to take a bit of time. After all, the orthodontist does have to use a fair bit of pressure to get everything out of your mouth, and this can take a while. You may notice that there is an slightly uncomfortable pressing sensation as the orthodontist takes the braces off. Right after the braces come off, you may notice an almost slimy sensation on your teeth. This is because you’ll have become accustomed to having the rough brackets in.
What to Expect Afterward
After you get your braces off, you will probably notice that your teeth feel tender and sore for a few days. This is because there is a huge change in the amount of pressure that is being applied to your mouth. You may also notice some rough patches around your mouth and lips from where your braces have been. These should heal up quickly, but you can ask our orthodontist for help preventing them from cracking or opening up.
Going Back to the Orthodontist
Just because you’re getting braces off doesn’t mean that your treatment is over. Once your braces have been removed, your orthodontist may still want you to wear a retainer or spacers to keep your teeth in place. There is usually some settling of the teeth that happens in the period directly after you’ve had braces, and your orthodontist will want to control this to ensure that it doesn’t have a negative effect on the overall result of the treatment.
