Common Types of Braces for Adults

Braces aren’t just for kids. More and more adults are choosing to have orthodontic treatment to enhance their smiles. If you have a problem with the alignment of your teeth and you are an adult, it’s never too late to get the smile that you have always wanted.

Your smile is your calling card, one of the first things people notice when you are in a social situation or at work. You can give yourself a boost of confidence with orthodontic treatment. You’ll also give yourself the gift of healthier teeth that are easier to clean.

You have many options when it comes to braces for adults. It is important to consider common types of braces for adults to help you make this important decision about your oral health.

Braces Done the Old-Fashioned Way

When you hear the word braces, you probably picture traditional braces. That means metal wires that are threaded through metal brackets with rubber bands to apply pressure. This is still a popular method for orthodontic correction, whether you are an adult or a teen.

There have been many advances in the field of orthodontics and your traditional braces have improved, as well. You can choose clear brackets or brackets that are the same color as your teeth if you would like your braces to look less obvious.

Dr. Runnels can tell you all about the ways traditional braces can be tailored to suit you.

Invisalign®: The Practically Invisible Approach

If you don’t want anyone to know you are having orthodontic treatment, Invisalign® may work for you. These clear aligners are custom-made to fit your mouth and slide over your teeth. You can take them out when you brush and floss or if you have a special event.

You need to wear them for a minimum of 22 hours a day if you want to see results as soon as possible. They are made from a durable plastic that won’t irritate your mouth. Invisalign® isn’t for everyone.

These aligners are most effective for minor issues that are in need of orthodontic correction. Our orthodontist will have to evaluate your mouth to determine if these clear aligners are the best choice for you.
