The power of an attractive smile cannot be overstated. If a person has an attractive smile, their personal and professional life is greatly improved. This is because, for better or for worse, we make decisions about other people based on their smile. If a person has a smile that is crooked, missing teeth or misaligned, people automatically assume that this individual is poorly educated, has a bad job, lacks intelligence and in some cases lacks personal hygiene. For this reason, any device or procedure that can improve a person’s smile is warmly welcomed.
The Carriere® Distalizer is a device that is designed to correct a person’s bite. The effects that it has on a person’s smile are similar to those of orthodontic headgear. It helps to push a person’s teeth into their correct position. It has been used to correct an overbite, but it can also be used for patients who have under bites. Orthodontists will usually install a Carriere® Distalizer on patients before they treat them for braces.
The Carriere® Distalizer is connected directly to the patient’s teeth. It is a metal bar that has one side adhered to the canine teeth and the other to a molar. The Carriere® Distalizer produces a force that is strong enough to move the patient’s teeth.
Once a person’s teeth have been corrected, the Carriere® Distalizer will be removed. The entire treatment usually lasts for between three and five months. Once the Carriere® Distalizer has been removed, braces or liners may be used to finish the dental correction.
When a person has an overbite, it is not just an aesthetic problem. Depending on the severity of the overbite, a patient may experience pain in their jaw and increased wear and tear of their tooth enamel. The increased wear and tear leads to tooth decay, cavities and gum disease. In extreme cases, an overbite can lead to speech impediments.
An under bite can make it hard to chew, talk and swallow. Like an overbite, it can also cause increased tooth wear and tear and gum disease. Under bites have also been linked to the painful condition known as TMJ.
When the Carriere® Distalizer has been installed, a patient should follow the instructions they receive from our orthodontist to get the best results. This would include adjusting their diet to avoid sticky foods like candy, gum or caramel popcorn, since these may damage the Carriere® Distalizer.
Research has shown time and time again that a person’s smile not only affects the way that they feel about themselves, but it affects the way that other people view and treat them. If a person has a happy and healthy smile, others will be drawn to them. They can feel more confident about themselves and have greater success in life. If a person has a smile that they are ashamed of, they could lack the confidence they need to go after the things they want.
