Braces vs. Invisalign: What is the Difference?

If you are considering orthodontic treatment, you have many more options today than you did in the past. Thanks to innovations in the field, you are sure to find an effective course of treatment that is best for you. Two of the most popular alternatives are braces and Invisalign®.

Before you actually begin treatment, be sure to understand what both types of treatment are and how they work. From that point, you and our orthodontist can decide on the best method for you in order to get that beautiful smile. Regardless of which type of orthodontic correction you choose, your end goal will be an attractive set of properly aligned teeth that will give you a reason to smile.

Understanding Braces

Braces are still the most common form of orthodontic treatment. The first attempts at braces actually date back to ancient times. Modern braces use metal brackets that are attached to your teeth with metal wires that run through them. Through the use of ties on the braces or elastic bands, they apply pressure to your teeth and gradually shift them in the proper direction. Other types of braces include ceramic braces or lingual braces. Whether you have gaps in your teeth, crowding or issues with your bite, braces can be used for orthodontic treatment.

Understanding Invisalign®

Invisalign® is a more recent development in the field of orthodontics that is gaining in popularity. It involves a set of clear aligners that are tailored to fit your mouth. The aligners are made from a medical-grade plastic that is extremely durable. You need to wear them for at least 22 hours every day for the best results. They are removable, allowing you to maintain your hygiene regimen for your teeth without anything getting in the way. If you have a special occasion or a contact sporting event, you can remove your aligners and replace them after the event.

Invisalign® aligners are changed for a new set every two weeks to adapt to the adjustments of your teeth. The length of treatment compares to braces. However, Invisalign® is intended for cases in need of mild correction. If your orthodontic issue is severe, you will probably need to choose a different course of action.
