AcceleDent for Accelerated Orthodontic Treatment

AcceleDent™ is an appliance that consists of a mouthpiece that fits over the patient’s teeth. The mouthpiece comes in different sizes, so there will be one that matches the patient’s mouth arch. The working part that fits inside the mouth provides a gentle vibratory force. There is an activator dock that has a charging port and displays the amount of time a patient uses the device. This is useful for orthodontists to determine the amount of accelerated treatment the patient is getting.

AcceleDent™ needs to be used for at least 20 minutes every day during a patient’s orthodontic treatment. Since it’s hands-free, it can be used anytime. For example, it can be used while watching TV, working at the computer or reading.

The vibration speeds up tooth movement with micro-pulses to make the teeth move faster while they are being guided by the orthodontics. It may also reduce the pain patients often feel after their orthodontics is tightened. The micro-pulses remodel the bone that surrounds the teeth. This is how the teeth can move more quickly.

Before pulsatile forces were applied to an orthodontic device, there was research that showed it increased the rate of fracture healing and enhanced bone density in long bones. Researchers found that similar pulsatile forces also have an effect on the thickened ridge of bone that contains the tooth sockets. The results of the research showed that in the 14 patients involved in the study, the tooth alignment occurred 75 percent faster than the highest rate previously known, and the space between extracted teeth closed 30 percent faster.

Research was also conducted to look at the effect of vibratory stimulation on reducing pain after braces had been tightened. The study showed that pain and discomfort were significantly reduced for the participants who used the vibratory device.
