Invisalign – A More Discreet Option for Adults

One of the most common reasons that adult patients avoid orthodontic care is because they would like to steer clear of traditional metal braces. While these devices are incredibly effective, many people do not like their appearance or the amount of maintenance that they require.

If this sounds like your own situation, then you might want to take a fresh look at Invisalign aligners. These trays could help you create a straight and healthy smile without the many disadvantages of metal braces.

Treating Malocclusion

Malocclusion is used to describe any misalignment of one’s teeth. This includes large gaps between the teeth, teeth in the improper position, or an overcrowded smile. Many people believe that these issues are purely cosmetic, but untreated malocclusion can result in major health problems such as cracked teeth and chronic migraines.

Traditional metal braces have been used to help countless patients create a perfect smile. Depending on the severity of the malocclusion, these devices take anywhere from just a few months to multiple years to completely restore one’s smile.

Unfortunately, they can also be unsightly, uncomfortable, and difficult to maintain. Patients will need to spend extra time brushing and flossing while avoiding certain foods. Luckily, modern treatment options such as Invisalign aligners will allow you to bypass these issues while rebuilding your smile.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign aligners are clear trays that can be used to straighten a patient’s smile. This process begins with a thorough screening of the patient’s mouth to ensure that they have no other issues that would affect their treatment.

While Invisalign is an ideal option for many adult patients, those with severe malocclusion might need to use traditional metal braces for a short period of time before transitioning to Invisalign aligners.

After the initial screening, impressions are taken of the patient’s upper and lower teeth and then sent off to an Invisalign manufacturer. These trays are nearly invisible once they are in the patient’s mouth and can be taken out at any time. This means that you can continue to eat your favorite foods and brush with ease.

The treatment time for these aligners is somewhat similar to metal braces, but patients will not need to schedule as many appointments. Instead, you will be given new trays to use every two to three weeks as your teeth slowly begin to move.

Is It Right for Me?

The Invisalign system is one of the best options for anyone that would like a discreet way to improve the appearance of their smile.

As long as the patient wears their aligners for a specified number of hours a day and continues to care for their teeth, they should begin to see results in as little as a few months.
