5 Ways Braces Improve Oral Hygiene

There are countless reasons to get braces – from teeth that require additional care to create the perfect shape to those that may cause pain, or even for personal aesthetic reasons. From children to adults, orthodontic work is more common than ever before. When it comes to keeping your teeth clean on a day-to-day basis, there are a few ways that braces can encourage good oral hygiene. Here are just a few:

1. Increased awareness

The first thing that causes us to take additional note of the state of our teeth when we’re wearing braces is the fact that you actually notice your teeth more. Whether you opt for Invisalign® or traditional braces, when you have something attached to your teeth, you’re far more likely to notice any trapped bits of food or unbrushed areas.

2. Improved understanding

For both children and adults, a lesser understanding of dental hygiene can result in inadequate cleaning. Our orthodontist will be able to educate you on the best way to keep your mouth fresh while wearing braces, and even provide you with the correct tools to get the job done.

3. Extra interest

Being more involved in the condition of your teeth might just pique your interest as to what exactly is going on in your mouth. This is especially the case for children, who enjoy keeping their colored braces clean and shiny and gain a deeper understanding of the cleaning process at the same time.

4. More professional visits

Nothing pushes you more to keep your teeth clean than someone else having their hands in your mouth! Scheduled orthodontic visits or checkups can be a big incentive to ensure your teeth and mouth are kept hygienic and clean at all times; because if they’re not, our orthodontist will undoubtedly know.

5. Visual cues

There’s not much worse than going on a date with spinach stuck in your teeth, so imagine having whole pieces of food in your braces. To avoid embarrassment in social situations, keeping your teeth clean and food-free at all times is essential – and further encourages better oral hygiene after every meal.
